Ushuaia - Tierra del Fuego
Ushuaia, known the “southernmost city of the world” is the capital of Tierra del Fuego Province, Anctartic and Islands of the South Atlantic. Located on the western side of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, it also features Argentinian Antarctica, Islas Malvinas, Georgias, Sandwich and Orcadas, de los Estados, and other minor islands, according to the limits established by Law nr. 23.775 of the “Provincialization of the last National Territory”, in 1990.
The province’s whole surface is 1,002,445 Km2 and the islands cover 981,359 km2.
Being 121 years old, it was founded on October 12th ,1884, by Commander Augusto Laserre, who arrived there to found Usuahia’s sub-prefecture for the protection of the borders in this southern portion. By far, it has been an important geopolitical point where many plans to populate the area have been carried out. The first of them started with a criminal settlement in 1896 in Isla de Los Estados and later in Ushuaia from 1901 to1948 when the Jail of Re-offenders was closed. With the “Industrial Promotion Law” there was a real increase in population from the 70s on, keeping constant up today.
Ushuahia is located at the foot Martial Mounts and by the shore of Beagle Channel, making it particularly attractive for the colours of its houses and the warmth of its inhabitants. A young city, with pushing spirit will be found by the visitor who arrives in these latitudes where beauty will surprise any time in each of its landscapes. Do not hesitate to discover it!!!
