Tucuman is the smallest province of Argentina, it
is located in the northwest region of the country. Its 22,524 square
kilometres surface extend between the parallels 26º and 28º
(south latitude) and the meridians 64º 30’ and 66º
30’ (west).
Salta on the north, Catamarca on the south and west and Santiago
del Estero to the east, are the limiting provinces.
Tucuman is the highest density populated province in the country
(more than 50 inhabitants per square kilometre) with 1,262,936 inhabitants
(as for 2001 statistics) from which almost the half live in San
Miguel de Tucuman, the capital and heart of the province well known
as ‘El Jardin de la Republica’. During spring time the
flowers show up on the squares of the city, balconies, streets and
garden providing a unique spectacle.
San Miguel de Tucuman stands out because of its history, archaeology,
weather, amazing landscapes making this city the chosen one by the
tourist.
The most visited places are: the house of Obispo Colombres, the
‘Casa de la Independencia’ which means historic independence
house (picture), the cathedral, the museum Casa Padilla, El Cadillal
dike. It also counts with archaeological circuits, Jesuit paths,
and provides a wide variety of excursions on the adventure style,
4WD, mountaineering, trekking on the Calchaquies valleysm, etc.
