San Martín de los Andes stands at south-west
of Neuquén Province.
The Lanin National Park Administration (383,612 has.) works there.
Its is placed at 640 m above sea level, 45 km from the Chilean border
and at 1575 km from Buenos Aires.
It has 23,354 inhabitants at present (according to provisional census
2001). It was founded on 4th February, 1898, on Curruhinca Mapuche
Community’s territory. Nowadays, being more than one hundred
years old, it still preserves the features of a traditional town
from the mountain range, whose inhabitants have co-operated to balance
urban development – especially its architecture- with the
natural environment, using characteristic materials such as wood
or stone, essential for the image of this fairy tale setting.
Its economy is practically based on tourist activity, and it is
the main population and service provider of Lanin National Park.
San Martin de los Andes is an excellent international tourist centre
to visit all year long: mountains, rivers, streams, waterfalls,
native woods and lakes provide the tourist with its noble nature
to perform different activities, visits and sports.
Hospitality and warmth of “cordillerano” spirit can
be enjoyed in all services: hotels, cottages, “hosterías”,
commercial centres, pubs, tea houses and restaurants, where the
most delightful specialities of stag, wild boar, trout, fine fruits,
chocolates or home-made jams can be tasted.
San Martín de los Andes is the “Valley of Gods”
that you deserve. Get to know it and enjoy it yourself!.
